" What is your dream? "
" What is your dream? "
What I really wanted to do was Industrial Design. I had planned to study Industrial Design in the UK after completing high school and military service in Korea. Unfortunately, due to the unexpected surge of COVID-19, my career and life took an unforeseen turn, leading me to become a Product Designer(UX/UI).
At the time when I was studying industrial design in high school, I watched several videos featuring Jony Ive introducing Apple products. Personally, I was loved his sincerity and respectful attitude toward design. However, I haven't had the chance to keep up with his recent news or interviews. By coincidence, I stumbled upon a wonderful commencement speech by him. The speech provided me with immense inspiration and at the same time prompted me to reflect on myself.
Over the course of six years, the prefix of my job title changed several times. It began with Graphic, then transitioned to UX/UI, and eventually evolved into Product(which also involved aspects of business). In his commencement speech, Jony emphasized that despite the job title and specific design skills, we shouldn't forget the fundamentally important things of creating.
In his speech, as he became preoccupied with becoming a professional designer, he started to worry about imbalance. He said, 'My attention was consumed by the specific skills in design rather than the fundamentally important ones of creating ... I almost felt like I was betraying the dreaming and wondering that had truly sustained me as a child.'
Still, we should know how to use auto layout in Figma or responsive design in web environments. But always keep in mind, without imagination, profoundly new thinking and potent ideas our practice has no purpose.
